I guest-blogged today on TJ Bennett’s blog, IMHO (In My Humble Opinion), where I was asked to write about what romance means to me. My story involves a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates, and a rented gorilla costume. Please pop over to post a comment or share your own story.
I’ve also been blogging up a storm over on Huffington Post, as the controversy surrounding the L.A. Zoo’s new Asian elephant habitat rages on, and the misstatements of the activists protesting the project continue to get me riled up. Links to all my pieces can be found here.
 Slash & Betty White
As awful as it has been for my zoo colleagues and I to have our work and integrity attacked on a daily basis, fighting the battle has brought many of us closer together. It has also drawn new supporters into the fold, including rocker Slash of Guns N’Roses, a big-hearted animal lover who has jumped into the fray to help the zoo battle the b.s.
This leads me to one of the most surreal experiences of my life: Earlier this week, I got to hang out with Slash and Betty White as they filmed a series of YouTube video appeals for the zoo. The dichotomy of seeing Slash and Betty White together still cracks me up. But they are both passionate about animals and committed to helping the zoo build this state-of-the-art habitat for endangered Asian elephants.
To top it off, I earned major good-stepmother points for getting Slash to autograph a Guns N’ Roses Greatest Hits CD for my stepson, a musician himself.
Rock on!
UPDATE: The zoo was victorious in its battle to keep Billy the elephant and continue construction of his expansive new habitat. On January 28, the City Council voted 11-4 in our favor!

 Monkey Love Thai edition
“Monkey Love” has been translated to Thai and is on sale now in that great Asian nation. Reviews have been posted by Thai bloggers, and since I can’t read a word of Thai, I’m going to assume that they are fabulously positive. If someone can tell me how to say “bestseller” in Thai, I’ll be on the lookout for that word in conjuction with “Monkey Love” — or rather, ใจอลวน คนอลเวง.

My last piece on Huffington Post (cross-posted here), about the efforts by animal activists to halt construction of the Los Angeles Zoo’s new elephant habitat, sparked more debate than anything I’ve previously written. As I’ve followed the firestorm of comments here and in other media outlets, I’ve been increasingly struck by what has become the rallying cry of Los Angeles’s anti-zoo crowd: “Free Billy.”
It’s cute and catchy, but utterly disingenuous.

A small, vocal group of animal activists in Los Angeles is mounting a campaign to halt construction on the new elephant exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo, and to send the Zoo’s Asian bull elephant, Billy, to a sanctuary.

The copyeditor in me wants to do this to every McCain-Palin yard sign or bumpersticker I see… which, thankfully in my blessedly blue state isn’t too many. As a law-abiding citizen, I’ve refrained from vandalizing actual yard signs or bumperstickers, but I’m not above doing it in PhotoShop. If you’re not familiar with copyediting symbols, you take out the L, close up the space, and the resulting four-letter word is exactly what I get when I hear McCain or his running mate bumble their way through explanations of our country’s current economic crisis. I’d write more, but I have to go take another aspirin.

What? I have a blog? Sorry, I forgot.
Please pardon me for not being like those other authors. You know them, the ones who have it all together, effortlessly (or so it seems) cranking out at least one new book each year, while faithfully keeping his or her readers updated through their website, blog, and Myspace/Facebook/Whatever. I haven’t logged into MySpace in so long I’ve forgotten my password. And while connecting with readers (aka shameless self-promotion) was ostensibly the reason I joined Facebook, lately it’s those addictive word games (challenge me to Scramble, I dare you!!) that have me logging on at 2 a.m.

Public libraries are facing tough times of late, but I was shocked and saddened to learn recently that my local library is scheduled to close next year due to city budget cuts. It seems Covina voters last year opted not to renew the city utility tax, which funds libraries, parks, and recreational facilities, among other services. Without the utility tax, the library will be forced to shut down, along with a host of other community services and even a fire station. Continue reading What’s a Library Worth?

I wrote one of the essays in the new anthology, Perfectly Plum, about Janet Evanovich’s hugely popular character, Stephanie Plum. It was the first time I’ve participated in an anthology, and what a blast–all the excitement of a book release, with only 1/19th of the work!
The book is divided into three sections: Life, Loves, and Other Disasters. Naturally, I’m in the “disasters” section.

Guys (or girls) in gorilla suits can be funny, especially when they appear in unexpected places. But the tuxedo-clad ape on last night’s Last Comic Standing was just sad. Read more on my Huffington Post blog, “The Gorilla’s Gotta Go.”
